Council is inviting the community to explore ageing in a new light through the upcoming Beyond Age exhibition, an intergenerational project that brings together older residents and local students to challenge age related stereotypes.

The exhibition features a powerful series of portraits created via a collaboration between older community members and Eltham High School photography students.

Each portrait pairs a current image with a photograph of the participant as a younger person, alongside their personal reflections on ageing.

The Beyond Age exhibition coincides with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and aims to challenge ageism, promote respect and spark conversations about what it means to grow older.

As part of the project the participants took part in a workshop facilitated by Senior Rights Victoria, where they explored their lived experiences of ageing, discussed how ageism affects everyday life and shared advice they would give to their younger selves.

Students were actively involved in the workshop followed by the portrait photography sessions, building connections across generations and gaining a deeper understanding of ageing beyond stereotypes.

Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said the exhibition is a meaningful way to bring generations together and challenge misconceptions.

"Beyond Age is a poignant reminder that growing older is a privilege and a positive part of life. By bringing students and older residents together, we're not only challenging ageism but strengthening connections across our community," Cr Joiner said.

Guests will also hear from Ben Rogers, Seniors Rights Victoria, Council on the Ageing Victoria CEO who will be speaking on ageism.

The works will be launched at Eltham Community and Reception Centre on Thursday 25th June 1.30pm - 3.30pm.
