Bigger And Better Monash Medical Centre One Step Closer

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is getting on with delivering more world-class care to families in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs, with early works starting on the massive upgrade of the Monash Medical Centre.

Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne today announced Kane Constructions has started early works for this important expansion of one of Melbourne's busiest hospitals.

Early works on site will involve the construction of temporary ambulance parking and accessway and a new temporary drop-off zone for the Monash Children's Hospital, paving the way for main construction to begin next year.

The $535 million expansion will deliver a new seven-storey medical tower above the newly expanded emergency department, ensuring families across Melbourne's south east have access to the world-class healthcare they need for generations to come.

The new tower will include operating theatres with pre-operative and post-operative beds, and an intensive care unit - providing capacity for 7,500 more surgeries each year.

It will also include expanded maternity services for local mums, with new and upgraded birthing suites and maternity beds to support around 2,400 births annually.

The project will also deliver a new Central Sterile Services Department to improve the efficiency of processes that sees medical equipment delivered to the hospital's dedicated doctors and nurses - helping to get more people off waiting lists and into surgery.

The project is expected to create more than 1,500 construction jobs and will support additional medical jobs when it opens.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Monash Health, construction is expected to be complete in 2029.

The deliver of this project is part of the Hospital Infrastructure Delivery Fund, with more than $1.6 billion to redevelop three of Victoria's busiest metropolitan hospitals - including a $275m upgrade at the Austin Hospital and a $813m redevelopment at the Northern Hospital.
