Infringement notices have been issued, and e-bikes have been seized following an operation focused on the illegal use of e-bikes in the state's north yesterday.
On Saturday 7 May 2026 officers attached to Tweed/Byron Police District conducted Operation Cyclesafe, focused on the unlawful use of electric bicycles (e-bikes) across the district.
As part of the operation, fifteen people received warnings for failing to wear an approved and properly fastened bicycle helmet, while fourteen others were issued infringement notices for failing to wear an approved bicycle helmet.
One person received an infringement notice for riding a bicycle on a footpath (16 years or older) and another person received a caution for using a mobile phone while riding a bicycle.
Police also spoke to a number of young people educating them on e-bike laws.
Of note, around 6pm, a 15-year-old boy was observed travelling at excessive speed on a modified bicycle in Tweed Heads South. Following inquiries, the bicycle was found to have been altered so that it no longer had pedals, making it non-compliant with current legislation,
A short time later, police observed a 23-year-old man driving a go-cart-style vehicle before allegedly preforming a burnout. The man was arrested and will be issued a Court Attendance Notice.
About 7pm, another 15-year-old boy was seen to be riding an electric motorbike at an excessive speed on Kennedy Drive. The boy was arrested and will face action for using an unregistered registrable vehicle, being unlicensed, and not paying road tax.
All three bikes were seized and impounded.
Inquiries under Operation Cyclesafe continue.
