Billy the kid ball skills part of new Logan fitness program

The Move It Logan program will offer free and low-cost fitness activities to encourage residents to become more active.

A ball skills program developed by rugby league legend Billy "The Kid' Slater will be part of a new all-ages fitness program being launched by Logan City Council.

The Move It Logan program begins next Monday (June 10).

It is designed to encourage Logan residents to incorporate at least 30 minutes of heart-rate raising physical activity into their day.

The program offers free and low-cost fitness activities to encourage residents to become more active through group fitness sessions, basketball, touch rugby sevens and aerobics.

Move it Logan, funded by a $187,000 grant from the Federal Government through Sport Australia, has been developed to cater for all ages.

Three to six-year-olds will be able to participate in the basic ball skills program developed by now retired State of Origin star Slater.

The year-long Move It Logan program aims to highlight the value and benefits of regular physical activity and encourage local residents who are not currently physically active to participate in one of the activities on offer.

Logan City Council Community Services Director Katie Barton-Harvey said a key element of Move It Logan would be the provision of regular free buses to several activities.

"We want to ensure that barriers to fitness are removed wherever possible and providing some transport will help with that," she said.

The wheelchair-friendly bus, which carries up to eight people, will run a round trip every Monday during school terms between Caddies Community Centre in Jimboomba to the Beenleigh Aquatic Centre for an adaptive aquatics class from 10am to 10.30am.

It will also operate every Thursday between Caddies Community Centre and Meakin Rd, Meadowbrook to transport people to and from an adaptive fitness class which will run from 5pm to 6pm.
