The new Birkbeck Drive roundabout is now open to motorists after Rockhampton Regional Council crews delivered the project ahead of schedule, easing congestion and improving traffic flow for residents.
Final touches were put on the new road infrastructure in early July, three months ahead of schedule, with the new roundabout paving the way for future growth in the area.
The project, which was jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government, began in June 2025 and included the installation of the new roundabout, kerb and channel, and footpaths.
In March this year, a temporary closure of a section of Alexandra Street was implemented as part of a joint initiative between Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).
The resumption of traffic on Alexandra Street coincides with the opening of the new roundabout, marking another milestone in improving connectivity in the area.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the early completion reflected the hard work of Council crews on the ground.
"A lot of effort has gone into delivering this project, and our Council crews have worked hard to get it open three months ahead of schedule.
"Projects like this are about planning for the future. This roundabout will improve traffic flow today while helping support the continued growth we're seeing across the region."
Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said the completion of the roundabout marked a major milestone.
"It's really great to see the progress that has been made in this area, to think that this time last year there wasn't even a roundabout on this road," Cr Taylor said.
"What's also a relief for motorists is the fact the detours around Alexandra Street have been removed and traffic is flowing in both directions.
"The new road, kerbing and footpaths look fantastic, the crews have done a great job.
"I'd especially like to thank the community for their patience while these diversions have been in place. I know, at times, these traffic diversions have been frustrating, but this investment will support our growing community into the future."
