Bishkek Conference Spotlights Education's Role in Disarmament

OSCE

The OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek (POiB), in co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and International Committee of the Red Cross Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic, organized a regional conference "Education for Peace and Security" to mark the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness.

The International Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly following an initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic, promotes awareness of disarmament and non-proliferation, with a particular focus on the role of education and youth engagement.

The conference brought together representatives of state institutions, international organizations, academia and youth to discuss how education can contribute to strengthening a culture of peace and preventing security risks. The event was implemented within the framework of the POiB Project aimed at "Strengthening National Capacities to Implement Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Commitments."

"Education is one of the most effective tools for preventing the proliferation of weapons and building resilient societies. By empowering young people and strengthening institutional knowledge, we invest in long-term peace and security. The POiB remains committed to supporting the authorities of the Kyrgyz Republic in advancing disarmament and non-proliferation through practical co-operation and sustainable capacity-building," said Christopher Blair, Officer-in-Charge of the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek.

As a follow-up, on 6 March, a regional scientific and practical conference hosted by the Kyrgyz National University named after J. Balasagyn further explored the role of higher education in disarmament and non-proliferation. The side event gathered academic experts, practitioners and students to discuss the integration of non-proliferation topics into educational programmes and to develop practical recommendations for strengthening national and regional capacities.

Supporting both events, the POiB reaffirmed its role in strengthening the capacities of the authorities of the Kyrgyz Republic through education, awareness-raising and enhanced inter-institutional co-operation. These efforts contribute to the effective implementation of international non-proliferation commitments and promote a comprehensive approach to sustainable peace and security in the Central Asian region.
