Black Cats - CATalyst For Good Luck - Wollongong

Adored by ancient Romans, worshipped by Egyptian pharaohs and loved by sailors who believed black cats would bring good luck to a ship and its crew, this Friday 13th we're challenging you to take a fresh look at black cats.

Right now, we've plenty of cats on Council's books looking for their forever home. And while the cats have a wide range of markings, a number of them are black domestic shorthair cats.

"We're seeing quite a few cats come into Council's care at the moment, including kittens that are as young as two weeks' old,'' Wollongong City Council's Project Director Animal Care and Impounding Services Daniel Kennedy said.

"And while two weeks is too young for adoption, we've a large number of cats that are ready to find their forever home. This includes some beautiful black cats, and we think Friday 13th is the perfect time to think about adopting a new feline friend.''

The cats include five-month-old Raisin and two-year-old Frappe .

"My personal favourite is the handsome senior cat Shadow. He's 11 years old and came to us as a lost cat,'' Mr Kennedy said.

"He is currently being looked after by foster carers and they tell us he's a really companionable and undemanding boy who just loves being near people.''

Adoption of cats and kittens from Wollongong City Council's Animal Care and Impounding Services ranges in price from $50 to $200. All cats and kittens come microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, flea and worm checked and lifetime registered.

"Since launching this program in April 2024, we've rehomed some 532 cats and kittens,'' Mr Kennedy said.

"It really is special seeing the faces of the new pet owners as they pick up their new fur friends and take them home.

"If you're thinking of welcoming a cat into your home, I encourage you to check out Council's website to see the range of cats and kittens we've currently available for adoption.''
