Blue-green Algae Bloom Detected In Mount Morgan Dam

Mount Morgan Dam.JPG

Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding Mount Morgan residents to avoid recreational activities in the Mount Morgan Dam, with sampling continuing to detect a blue-green algae bloom.

Blue-green algae naturally occur and can bloom when water is clear, warm and moving slowly.

Sampling of the Mount Morgan Dam has identified high levels of algae, with tests showing that the bloom is made up of potentially toxic blue-green algae.

Residents are advised to avoid recreational activities in the local waterway until further notice, as the algae can pose a hazard to public health from direct contact or ingestion of untreated water.

Residents are reassured that the presence of blue-green algae affects only untreated water and that the treated water for Mount Morgan remains safe for consumption.

The Mount Morgan Water Treatment Plant is effectively removing algae during treatment, with increased monitoring in place.

Fitzroy River Water will continue regular testing at the Dam and will advise of any changes.

Signage advising of the blue-green algal blooms is in place at the boat ramp.
