Body found during search for person missing near Appin

A body, believed to be that of a missing person from Wollongong, has been found near Appin.

Whilst the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of a 52-year-old man, who was last seen leaving a home in Woonona last Thursday (14 March 2019) in a blue sedan.

About 8.10am yesterday (Tuesday 19 March 2019), the blue sedan was located on a trail at the entrance of the Dharawal National Park by officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.

A search of the area commenced, involving officers from Campbelltown Police Area Command and Lake Illawarra Police District, the Dog Unit, PolAir, Police Rescue and the State Emergency Service (SES).

The search concluded just after 2pm today (Wednesday 20 March 2019) when the body was found in the National Park.

Although the investigation is ongoing, initial inquiries suggest the circumstances surrounding the death are not suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Police would like to thank members of the public and media for their assistance.
