Body of woman and man located after car found in stormwater canal - Wentworthville

Two bodies have been located after a car was found in a stormwater canal at Wentworthville.

Officers attached to Cumberland Police Area Command were alerted after a Mazda3 was found in the Cooper Creek stormwater canal about 4.30pm yesterday (Monday 7 March 2022).

Police checked the vehicle and found personal possessions inside; however, they were unable to locate the car's owner, a 67-year-old woman, or her 34-year-old son, who was believed to be with her.

An investigation commenced into their whereabouts.

About 8.20am today (Tuesday 8 March 2022), emergency services were called to Coopers Creek Canal, near Hopkins Street, Constitution Hill, after reports a body had been sighted in the water.

With assistance from specialist resources including Police Rescue and the SES, the body of a woman was pulled from the water.

A short time later, officers searching nearby located the body of a man in water, which was retrieved by Police Divers.

The bodies are yet to be formally identified but are believed to be those of the woman and man.

Crime scenes have been established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding how the vehicle came to be in the canal and their deaths is underway.

Reports will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
