Boosting Firearms Intelligence for Police, Communities

Department of Home Affairs

The Albanese Labor Government has today delivered an important milestone in strengthening Australia's firearms information capability, with the upgraded National Firearm Identification Database (NFID) now live as part of the National Firearms Register (NFR) program.

The upgraded NFID provides improved, nationally consistent firearms identification tools for police, firearm dealers and firearm owners, supporting safer communities and stronger law enforcement cooperation across jurisdictions.

The NFID is a key Commonwealth‑delivered component of the NFR and supports the accurate identification and characterisation of firearms using consistent information such as make, model, calibre and capacity.

The upgrade delivers refreshed public and police portals to NFID, improving usability, navigation and search functionality, while aligning firearm identification information with agreed national data standards.

The public portal provides clear and consistent information to support lawful firearm ownership and dealer activity, while the police portal assists law enforcement agencies to accurately identify and record firearms during registration, importation, transfer of ownership and movement across state and territory borders.

Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke said the upgrade was a practical step forward in improving firearms data quality and national information‑sharing.

The NFID upgrade includes the uplift of more than 19,000 firearms templates to align with nationally agreed standards to improve identification and tracking of weapons across Australia.

The release does not change policy, legislative settings or access permissions and requires no additional action from users.

The NFID upgrade is the first major milestone in an accelerated delivery schedule for Commonwealth components of the NFR throughout 2026.

Further capabilities under the NFR program, including licence and permit verification and cross‑border movement functionality, will continue to be delivered in close collaboration with states and territories.

The NFR is being developed through a partnership between the Commonwealth and state and territory governments and will ultimately provide a more complete, national view of registered firearms to support community and police safety.
