Boosting Local Councils for Key Infrastructure Projects

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future and delivering on its promise to support local councils with funding of more than $12 million for four Southern Queensland councils.

The funding supports councils deliver priority infrastructure projects that meet the needs of their communities, create safe, liveable and prosperous regions and promote long-term council sustainability.

The support is being delivered as part of the 2024-28 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program, with the key infrastructure projects are improving essential services, amenities and water supply networks.

It's just one of the ways the Crisafulli Government is delivering a better lifestyle through a stronger economy, backing local governments and improving council projects after a decade of decline under Labor.

The five projects funded in this round include:

  • Barcoo Shire Council - Barcoo Stonhenge Caravan Park Amenities: $373,301

  • Barcoo Shire Council - Windorah Staff Housing Project: $1.63 million

  • Goondiwindi Regional Council - Texas Sewage Treatment Plan Effluent Irrigation Scheme: $2.75 million

  • Western Downs Regional Council - Jandowae referable dam spillway reconstruction: $1.13 million

  • Toowoomba Regional Council - SCADA and Telemetry Major Upgrade Stage 2 Project: $8.19 million

Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said the funding demonstrated the Crisafulli Government's commitment to supporting councils to meet the needs of their communities.

"The Crisafulli Government has always, and will always, support Queensland councils," Minister Leahy said.

"The funding we provide through the LGGSP helps local councils deliver priority projects that improve the infrastructure and services that local communities need.

"The essential work will improve the sustainability of core council services to these Southern Queensland communities."

Member for Gregory Sean Dillon said through the LGGSP he was proud to be delivering more than $2 million for upgrades at the Barcoo Stonhenge Caravan Park amenities and the Windorah Staff Housing Project, supporting stronger services and better facilities for our remote communities.

"This more than $2 million investment into the Barcoo Shire Council will improve the essential infrastructure, strengthen local services and help our region continue to grow and thrive."

Member for Southern Downs James Lister said this $2.75 million investment for the Texas Sewage Treatment Plan Effluent Irrigation Scheme was about smarter water management, protecting our waterways and building more resilient regional infrastructure.

"This will deliver long-term improvements to the Texas Sewage Treatment Plan Effluent Irrigation Scheme, enabling safe reuse of treated water and strengthening environmental outcomes for the Southern Downs region."

Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts said this $8.19 million investment in SCADA and Telemetry would modernise Toowoomba's infrastructure, giving council real-time oversight and faster response times to keep services running smoothly.

"Delivering over $8 million though the LGGSP for Toowoomba's SCADA and Telemetry upgrades will strengthen the reliability and resilience of our critical water and wastewater systems."

Member for Condamine Pat Weir said the SCADA and Telemetry project, backed by $8.19 million would enhance system monitoring across Toowoomba and help ensure safer, more reliable services for our community.

"This major investment will transform the way council monitors and manages critical infrastructure in Toowoomba, delivering smarter technology and stronger service reliability for residents."
