Bourke Road set for makeover

Improving safety and increasing connectivity are the aims of a major makeover to Bourke Road in Oakleigh South.

The work comes on the back of the speed limit being reduced to 50 km/h to reflect the road no longer having major arterial status since the opening of the Dingley Bypass.

The construction of a concrete shared user path on the south side to connect to the future bike lanes in Old Dandenong Road and the existing Dingley Bypass shared user path is the centrepiece of the $1.5 million project, which also includes the laying of a new asphalt surface between 93 Old Dandenong Road and Clarinda Road, linemarking, the installation of two new concrete bus stops, new kerb, vehicle crossings pram crossings and traffic islands, and a stormwater drainage system.

Kingston Mayor Hadi Saab said this project is another example of Council's commitment to improving the local transport network.

"Every year we invest over $10 million in roads and drainage infrastructure to support the current and future needs of our community, Cr Saab said.

"Projects like this fit perfectly with our Integrated Transport Strategy that sets out a vision for a connected, integrated and sustainable transport network that is safe, healthy, accessible, reliable and efficient."

Bunjil Ward Councillor Steve Staikos said our Clarinda and South Oakleigh community have told us to improve transport and connectivity in the northern part of the city.

"Kingston is investing your rates dollars wisely into providing access for pedestrians, public transport users, cyclists and motorists and by further improving ease of movement to our wonderful area," Cr Staikos said.

VCrete Contractors Pty Ltd have been awarded the contact for the project, with work set to commence early in 2023.
