- Bunbury Bowling Club opens new accessible bowling green
- Fulfilled election commitment delivers inclusive sporting opportunities in Bunbury
People with disability in the South-West region can celebrate greater access to Bunbury Bowling Club facilities, with the official opening today of the club's accessible bowling green.
The wheelchair-accessible synthetic bowling green, completed last month, received $200,000 in funding as part of an election commitment from the McGowan Government to improve active participation opportunities at the Bunbury Bowling Club.
Additional wheelchair friendly alterations to the club include the installation of an automatic door to the clubhouse, ramps to the bowling greens, the levelling of outside paving areas and new fencing and gates.
The barriers to inclusion removed as a result of these upgrades has fostered a partnership between WA iSports Inc. and the Bunbury Bowling Club, with iSports athletes now competing in the club's weekly corporate lawn bowls tournament.
The remaining funding for the $300,000 project was contributed by the Bunbury Bowling Club, along with considerable in kind support from the club.
As noted by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
"The installation of a wheelchair-accessible bowling green at Bunbury Bowling Club is yet another example of the McGowan Government's commitment to sport and recreation in regional WA.
"Along with the other changes made to the club, Bunbury can now boast an inclusive facility which is welcoming to all.
"Local sport and recreation facilities are vital for keeping our communities connected, healthy and vibrant, and again this Government is making sure regional WA gets a fair go.
"This club now promises to be an important draw for bowling enthusiasts from across the region, and the State."
As noted by Bunbury MLA Don Punch:
"There is a real commitment in Bunbury to inclusive sports and Bunbury Bowling Club's initiative to develop an accessible green is a great example of that.
"Social inclusion and community participation are really important to the health and wellbeing of all Western Australians, so I am proud to be part of a government that is supporting and funding projects like this.
"The Bunbury Bowling Club is a great club and its activities and events will now be accessible to even more members of our community, thanks to the hard work of the club and support from the McGowan Government."
