In a first for Brimbank, Council has adopted a strategy to manage parking across the municipality.
Brimbank Mayor Cr Lucinda Congreve said Council developed the new strategy because it recognised the importance of having a coordinated, consistent and transparent approach to managing and providing parking.
"Parking is a big issue for most councils and communities.
"We wanted to do our best to manage parking efficiently and consistently, which is why after much work and public consultation, we've now got a strategy in place.
"It's important Council manages parking in a fair manner. I'm sure everyone would agree parking should also be accessible and affordable as well as sustainable," Cr Congreve said.
"The strategy will also help us to decide what type and amount of parking is needed in town centres, around residential areas, and at places that draw large amounts of people – like railway stations, schools, hospitals, places of worship and even industrial areas.
"I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who provided a view on the draft strategy. We've had a massive response from our community, especially to our Facebook survey. Thank you for your views and comments, they've given us a useful picture of your needs and helped us shape the strategy," Cr Congreve said.
A number of submissions expressed concerns about inadequate parking around railway stations.
As this is a State Government responsibility, Council will seek meetings with the State Government to discuss the matter.
Council will write to the Hon. Jacinta Allan, Minister for Transport Infrastructure; the Hon. Lily D'Ambrosio, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change; the Hon. Melissa Horne, Minister for Public Transport; and the Hon. Marlene Kairouz, Minister for Suburban Development to seek discussions particularly in relation to parking around train stations and transport planning across Brimbank and Melbourne's West.
