Tourism Minister Paul Papalia was in Broome today to officially open the Roebuck Bay Lookout, an elevated platform enabling visitors to enjoy sweeping views over Roebuck Bay while learning about the culture and history of the area.
The lookout, which was completed in November 2018, is located at the intersection of Dampier Terrace and Frederick Street in Chinatown, within the Shire Road Reserve.
Construction of the lookout formed part of the $12.7 million Chinatown Revitalisation Project, delivered jointly by the State Government and the Shire of Broome.
The project includes 10 sub-projects all designed to reinforce Chinatown's position as the 'Heart and Soul' of Broome - the historic, cultural and hospitality centre of the town.
Tourism Western Australia provided $600,000 of funding to the Shire of Broome through the Federal Government's Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Program to support construction of the road connection between Dampier Terrace and Frederick Street, and the resulting Roebuck Bay Lookout.
The lookout is a point of interest on the award-winning Jetty to Jetty self-guided heritage walk, which provides a rich visual history with unique personal accounts from those living in Broome during the height of the pearling trade.
Yawuru traditional owners were on site during the construction of the lookout, and worked with Broome Senior High School students in the development of artwork and cultural information panels incorporated into its structure and signage.
As stated by Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:
"It is my pleasure to officially open the Roebuck Bay Lookout - an exciting addition to the Chinatown Redevelopment Project.
"The lookout provides visitors with another attraction at the entrance to Chinatown, offering breathtaking views over Roebuck Bay.
"The Chinatown Redevelopment Project aims to enhance the Broome town centre, increasing its appeal to visitors as a shopping and leisure destination.
"The development's new attractions allow visitors to spend a day or evening in the town, potentially without the use of a vehicle, and increase the appeal for overnight stays.
"The road link and Roebuck Bay Lookout at the entrance to Chinatown are integral parts of this redevelopment."
