Sunday 29 March is the annual Day of Action for Neighbour Day which is a good reminder of how important it is to know and connect with the people around us.
Getting to know your neighbours helps to create safer, stronger and more resilient communities, especially in isolated or high-risk areas. When we build local connections, we can:
- Prepare for and stay informed about hazards
- Support each other during emergencies
- Reduce loneliness and isolation
- Create a stronger sense of community
- Notice if something seems unusual
Neighbour Day 2026 encourages us to make belonging part of everyday life through small acts of connection, kindness and inclusion.
Here are some simple ways you can help build a sense of belonging in your neighbourhood:
- Start small, be visible.
Walk more, relax on a front porch or garden open to the street so that you get to interact more with your neighbours. Make the first move and say hello! A smile, a quick chat or a friendly hello at the local café or shops can go a long way in creating a more inclusive and resilient community.
- Attend a council run workshop or event to find like-minded people in your area or join a local group or online community.
It's a great way to meet people and stay connected. View upcoming City of Ryde workshops.
