Australia's targeted action is building the Great Barrier Reef's resilience to climate change and other threats.
We use a resilience-based approach. This means we focus on helping the Reef survive, recover and adapt when it faces stress.
Resilience-based management allows Australia to:
- use knowledge of current and future pressures
- target management actions to protect ecosystems
- anticipates threats to enhance recovery capacity and apply proven actions
- use proven methods to help the Reef bounce back from damage and adapt to future impacts.
By focusing on practical, science-based actions, we are helping the Reef to be more resilient.
Key actions include:
- Working with farmers, landholders and regional partners to improve the quality of water flowing from land into the Reef.
- Protecting and restoring important habitats such as wetlands and seagrass meadows.
- Controlling crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks across high-value reefs.
- Delivering world-leading science and solutions to help the reef adapt and recover.
- Zoning compliance to regulate activities in the marine park.
Together we are helping build a stronger, healthier and more resilient Great Barrier Reef for the future.
