Getting rid of old whitegoods, broken furniture and other bulky household items is about to get easier, with Goulburn Mulwaree Council's kerbside bulky waste collection trial set to begin in Marulan and Goulburn.
The trial gives eligible households a convenient way to dispose of bulky items from the kerb. Households who currently have Council's three-bin service (garbage, recycling and green organics) will receive one collection of up to two cubic metres (2 m³) of eligible bulky household waste.
Council approved the trial earlier this year and, following a procurement process, has now finalised arrangements with a preferred contractor to deliver the service.
Marulan residents will be first, with collections starting from Monday, 7 December 2026. Goulburn collections are planned to start from Monday, 1 February 2027. Further information on collection zones, streets and timeframes will be provided ahead of the service.
To help residents prepare, Council will provide information ahead of each collection period outlining when each area will be serviced, when items can be placed at the kerb, and what can and cannot be collected.
Marulan residents have already received a community notification letter, while households across the rest of the local government area (LGA) will receive their letters by early December. Residents are also encouraged to follow the Goulburn Mulwaree Waste Education Facebook page and check Council's website for updates.
Eligible households can place up to two cubic metres of accepted bulky household items at the kerb. Accepted items include:
- whitegoods
- damaged furniture that can be lifted by two people (maximum 50 kg per item)
- window blinds
- children's car seats and other baby items that are past their safety compliance date
- lawn mowers
- broken toys
- small damaged electrical items (excluding televisions, computers and monitors)
- other bulky household items that meet the collection requirements.
Residents are asked to sort their items into two separate piles: one for whitegoods, refrigerators, freezers and air-conditioning units, and one for all other accepted bulky waste.
The following items are not accepted and will not be collected through the kerbside bulky waste service:
- mattresses
- green waste, including tree prunings, grass and weeds
- food waste
- steel, fencing materials and iron sheeting
- construction and demolition waste
- asbestos
- chemicals and hazardous waste
- tyres
- glass
- televisions, computers and monitors.
The full Kerbside Bulky Waste Collection Terms and Conditions, including lists of accepted and unaccepted items, are included in residents' notification letters and are available in the Waste Management section of Council's website.
Items that can already be dropped off free of charge at Council's Community Recycling Centre at the Goulburn waste facility - including paint, gas bottles, batteries, vapes, fluorescent lights, fire extinguishers and smoke alarms - will also not be collected as part of the service.
Residents are encouraged to check the accepted and unaccepted items lists before placing anything at the kerb. Items that do not meet the collection requirements will not be collected. Instead, a letter will be placed in the resident's letterbox, and if the items are not removed at the direction of council within two days, a fine will be issued. Fines will start at $250.
Rural residents with a Rural Waste Card can continue to dispose of one bulky waste load of up to 2 m³ per financial year, subject to the Rural Waste Card Terms and Conditions.
Rural Waste Card holders who have not yet used their 2 m³ bulky waste allowance for the current financial year can use it at their nearest Council-operated waste facility before 30 June 2027.
For collection zones, dates and the latest updates, residents can visit Council's website, call the Waste Info Line on 4823 4417, or follow Goulburn Mulwaree Waste Education on Facebook and Instagram.
