Bunbury Waterfront contract awarded for Jetty Road causeway upgrade

  • Job-creating election commitment for the Transforming Bunbury Waterfront project well underway
  • WA company gets $2.5 million contract to complete first part of causeway upgrade
  • Works are part of the wider $10.8 million stage two of the Transforming Bunbury Waterfront project
  • Improved causeway rock protection, public access and services for Casuarina Boat Harbour penholders

The McGowan Government's Transforming Bunbury Waterfront election commitment has reached a milestone with the awarding of the first contract for stage two of the project.

Western Australian company Advanteering Civil Engineers has been awarded the first of two contracts that will deliver the $10.8 million upgrade of the Jetty Road causeway at Casuarina Boat Harbour in Bunbury.

The contract guarantees local jobs and benefits to the local economy with rock for the project to be sourced from South-West quarries, and local engineering and commercial diving businesses to be subcontracted for other specialised services.

From early November, about 24,000 tonnes of rock will be placed in the water using a specialised long reach excavator to improve protection during storm events.

Rock will be placed in layers over several months where the seabed is soft to maximise strength, and it is anticipated this phase of work will be completed by mid-2019. Another contract for the second phase of the upgrade is expected to be awarded in early 2019, with on-site work anticipated to commence in mid-2019.

Meanwhile, concept planning for the stage two foreshore development along Casuarina Drive has now started and a community survey is being launched today so Bunbury residents can share their thoughts on the revitalisation.

The redevelopment will include better parking at BP Beach, improved pedestrian and cycle links, enhanced landscaping and new spaces for recreational use with protection from coastal hazards.

The survey will close at 12pm on Wednesday October 10, 2018. Once the results are reviewed, draft landscaping designs are expected to be ready in late November and will be made available for community comment.
