That was recently demonstrated by participants of the Carinity Bunderra disability support service.

Six participants prepared food for a special luncheon, serving up tasty dishes for family members, caregivers, staff and community members.

Guests of the luncheon, held in the Salvation Army Hall in Kalbar, enjoyed a menu including an assortment of sandwiches, cheesy veggie sausage rolls, and black bean chocolate brownies.

The event was part of Carinity Bunderra's enablement program which supports people with a disability to learn life skills, build community connections, and live independently.

"Our Thursday Cooking and Nutrition Group runs each week, with participants working together to create their food preparation schedule for the upcoming term," Tammy Lotz from Carinity Bunderra explains.

"Each week they shop at the local IGA supermarket for ingredients and then prepare and cook a chosen recipe and participate in nutrition-based activities.

"This includes learning about food groups and reading food labels, making healthy choices, and learning about vitamins and minerals and which foods contain them."

Over the past few years, Carinity Bunderra groups have collaborated with the CWA's Country Kitchens Program and use their recipes regularly.
