Busking season in streets of Orange to start soon

Orange Council

With the festive season fast approaching, buskers are being urged to warm up the vocal chords, tune up the instruments, and get ready for the Busking Registration Day to be held at Orange City Council's front counter.

On Monday 27 November, buskers will be lining up at the Civic Centre on Byng Street for a permit to busk in the Orange CBD during the Christmas season.

Orange City Council's Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell said that busking is always a great opportunity for people to do what they are passionate about while making some money.

"Busking in Orange's main street during the weeks leading up to Christmas is one of the most colorful highlights of the holiday season," Cr McDonell said.

The 2023 busking season begins on Saturday 2 December, and the last day of busking will be Christmas Eve (Sunday 24 December).

"The gift of music and performance from our buskers is a cherished tradition that enriches the holiday experience in Orange and adds to the cultural fabric of Orange," Cr McDonell said.

"I did some busking in Orange in my younger years, and it was great fun and a really good way to connect with the community through music."

Approximately 8 locations are available along Summer Street and Anson Street, with buskers to perform during 5-hour time-slots. Buskers are encouraged to pick their preferred four dates and times, either mornings or afternoons, to allow everyone a chance to busk in the CBD.

"We'll be making a list and checking it twice, but we're committed to ensuring that everyone who wishes to participate in our Christmas busking festivities has an equal chance. But options are limited. By offering a variety of spots and timeslots, we make sure that every performer can be a part of this wonderful tradition," Cr McDonell said.

Buskers need to register in-person during the Busking Registration Day held on Monday, 27th November. Registrations will start when the Council doors open at 9 am and will continue until 5 pm or when all slots are filled.

Buskers should complete the application form and bring it with them on the day to register.

The form is available for download at https://www.orange.nsw.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Christmas-2023-Application-to-Busk-and-Risk-Management-Form.pdf.
