The first stage of a major upgrade of the Byron Bay swimming pool is to start in mid-2026.
The work will include an all-abilities amenities block and a reconfigured entrance to the pool complex.
Byron Shire Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye, said the new accessible amenities will be a big improvement on the existing facilities.
"This work is the start of the upgrade of the entire pool site as detailed in the Byron Shire Aquatic Strategy," Mayor Ndiaye said.
"As a regular swimmer I know how important swimming is for physical exercise, as well as relaxation, rehabilitation and overall mental health.
"The Byron Bay and Mullumbimby pools are reaching the end of their lives and our plan is to rebuild both facilities when money is available
"These projects are estimated to cost more than $20 million each and will have to be funded by grants.
"This year we invested in the installation of heating at the Mullumbimby pool, so it is open now during the cooler months and I am so pleased to see that we are starting work on the Byron Bay Pool," she said.
Stage one of the Byron Bay pool upgrade is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Byron Shire Council.
Work on stage one will start later this month and should be finished by the time the pool opens for the summer season in September.
Further engagement with the community stages on stages two and three of the Byron Bay pool upgrade is planned for late 2026.
