The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

"The State of Hawai'i has declared a state of emergency in Maui because of major wildfires, and evacuation efforts are under way on Maui and the island of Hawai'i.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I offer our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost family and friends and wish those who were injured a quick recovery. Our thoughts are with the people of Hawai'i in this distressing time.

"The United States is Canada's most important friend and ally, and we stand by their side as both our countries battle unprecedented wildfires.

"Global Affairs Canada has issued an advisory against non-essential travel to Maui due to the rapidly spreading wildfires. Canadians are strongly advised to exercise caution, to monitor local news and weather reports and to follow the instructions of local authorities, including evacuation orders."
