More Access To Clinical Trials For Victorians

VIC Premier

More Victorians will get access to new, potentially life-saving medical treatments thanks to Labor.

Minister for Medical Research Anthony Carbines today announced the six inaugural recipients of the Future Leader Fellows for Clinical Trials program.

The first Fellows are Dr Lucy Attwood, Dr Michelle Gooey, Dr Anna Watts, Dr Anna Cunliffe, Professor Justin Yeung and Dr Violet Mukaro.

These frontline health professionals were chosen following a competitive selection process.

They will be supported to develop and test approaches to increasing participation in clinical trials.

The Fellows will work directly with clinical trial sponsors, health services, researchers and communities.

Their focus will be on multicultural communities, First Nations people and regional Victorians access to clinical trials.

Backed by $2 million through Labor's Economic Growth Statement, a total of 15 Future Leader Fellows will be appointed over the next three years.

Fellowships are delivered by the Victorian Research Translation Centre Collaborative (VRTCC).

The VRTCC includes the Monash Partners Health Translation Network, Western Alliance Academic Health Science Centre and the Melbourne Academic Centre for Health.

Victoria hosts around 30 per cent of national clinical trials - more than any other state.

They are critical to translating medical research breakthroughs into real-world health outcomes for patients.

The program is part of Labor's more than $1.2 billion investment to back world-class medical research and breakthroughs.

Only Labor will continue supporting Victoria's leading researchers to turn new ideas into better treatments and better care for Victorians and people around the world

As stated by Minister for Medical Research Anthony Carbines

"Our investment in these six clinicians will help deliver faster medical breakthroughs that could save lives, and help expand Victoria's role as the medical research capital of Australia."

"These fellowships make sure everyone can participate in and benefit from cutting-edge medical research."

As stated by Victorian Research Translation Centre Collaborative Independent Chair, Prof Richard Larkins AC

"This program will enhance patient recruitment to clinical trials allowing earlier introduction of lifesaving new treatments as well as attracting more commercial investment into our state."
