- Cook Government commits nearly $20 million in a five-year funding extension for Cadets WA
- Cadets WA provides opportunities for young people to develop leadership and life skills
- Program supports more than 9,200 young people in 182 units across the State
The Cook Government has committed almost $20 million to extend the Cadets WA program for another five years.
The Cadets WA program supports more than 9,200 young people around Western Australia to develop leadership and life skills.
The 182 cadet units across the State will share in $19.9 million, with service agreements and Memorandums of Understanding being extended for five years, instead of the previous one- year agreements.
The extended timeframe will provide ongoing certainty and stability for both host agencies and participants in the program.
Since its inception in 1996, Cadets WA has supported young people across Western Australia to develop their leadership potential and community spirit through a range of activities including adventurous training, first aid, hiking, sports, and conservation.
Host agencies develop the curriculum for cadets and provide training and support for instructors who deliver the program in schools. The current programs are:
- Bush Rangers and River Rangers - Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions;
- Emergency Services Cadets Corps - Department of Fire and Emergency Services;
- Police Rangers - Western Australian Police Force;
- Surf Life Saving cadets - Surf Life Saving Association WA; and
- Navy, Army and Air Force cadets - Australian Defence Force (ADF).
More information about the program can be found on the Cadets WA website .
As stated by Youth Minister Hannah Beazley:
"The Cook Labor Government is proud to support Cadets WA and its host agencies in their efforts to develop the leadership and life skills of young people across Western Australia.
"Increasing the agreements from one to five years will ensure that Cadets WA units have the certainty they need to continue developing the confidence, knowledge and skills of the next generation.
"This funding is one of the many ways the Cook Government is supporting inclusive communities and empowering young people to be leaders in our community today and in the future."
