Cairns Libraries proving popular with community

Cairns Libraries welcomed more visitors per capita than other similar-sized, Queensland regional cities in the 2021/22 financial year.

More than 583,000 people walked through doors at Cairns Libraries, or 3.5 visitors per capita, placing the tropical city at number one against other regional libraries including Ipswich, Townsville, Redlands and Toowoomba.

Council noted the key benchmarking report, which provides a high-level update of Cairns Libraries' achievements and position when compared to other public libraries in the state.

The report provides statistics on services such as library membership, collections, loans, technology provision and other recorded transactions.

Key statistics for 2021/22 include:

  • Membership: 44,269
  • Physical visits: 583,184
  • Loans/collection usage: 822,551
  • Total physical stock items/collections: 146,770
  • Physical items acquired: 31,949
  • Program and event attendance: 20,621
  • Wi-Fi usage: 93,790 hours
  • Internet usage: 58,928 hours
