Camden Zooms In On Cyber Safety

Camden Council is cranking cyber security up a notch, rolling out new cyber safety initiatives aimed at building awareness and supporting safer online practices across our community.

The project will provide a series of tailored online and in-person training sessions, along with accessible education resources designed for people with disability, seniors and people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

Drawing on trusted resources such as Act Now. Stay Secure., the campaign will ensure content is practical, accessible and relevant to the needs of our diverse community.

An awareness campaign will also be delivered through Council's social media platforms, programs, events, libraries and community facilities across the Camden local government area.

A key component of the initiative will focus on CALD communities through an online awareness campaign developed in partnership with Council's Multicultural Reference Group. A series of short videos will share cyber safety messages in multiple community languages, ensuring culturally appropriate and language-accessible information reaches those who need it most.

Throughout the campaign, Council will promote three simple steps to help reduce the risk of cybercrime:

1. Install all software updates to keep devices secure;

2. Set up multi-factor authentication on all accounts; and

3. Use a strong, unique passphrase for every account.

Additional topics will include identifying and reporting scams, avoiding public Wi-Fi risks, protecting personal data and encouraging conversations with family and friends about staying cyber safe.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said it was important to be vigilant online.

"There's so much of our lives and information online these days, which is why it's so important to stay safe and

protected," she said.

"We are really encouraging our residents to think about their behaviour online - how are your digital habits? What are your passwords looking like, have you changed them recently? If something goes wrong online, do you know

how to report it? Do you know how to identify a scam?

"Keep an eye on Council's social media to see different topics explored each month in different languages."

This Cyber Security Awareness Support for Vulnerable Groups grant activity received grant funding from the Australian Government.
