The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aloysio Nunes, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“The third Strategic Partnership Dialogue was an important opportunity to review issues of bilateral, regional and global relevance, particularly in the areas of defense cooperation, mobility and assistance to refugees and migrants, as well as gender equality and human rights. Other topics in our discussion included science, technology and innovation cooperation, climate change and the environment, and trade and investment.”
“We have committed to accelerating negotiations toward an ambitious and comprehensive free trade agreement between Canada and the Mercosur countries – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay - and to continue to enhance collaboration to implement the Paris Agreement and continue the bilateral coordination in the lead-up to the Katowice Climate Change Conference in Poland this December.
“We addressed the need to reinforce and reinvigorate the rules-based international order to strengthen multilateral institutions and to make progress on issues such as human rights, peace and security. In that context, we, as key Organization of American States and Lima Group partners, discussed the crisis in Venezuela, in particular the regional impact of recent mass outward migration.
“We look forward to continuing to expand and deepen our relationship and welcome increased Canada-Brazil political, economic and social cooperation.”
