The City of Canada Bay has announced a once-in-a-generation revitalisation of the Rhodes Station Precinct, transforming the heart of Rhodes into a safer, greener, and more welcoming gateway for the community.
The project will reshape the public domain from Mary Street, along Walker Street, past Rhodes Station, and to the City of Canada Bay's $80 million Rhodes Recreation Centre at the corner of Walker and Gauthorpe streets.
Mayor Michael Megna said Council's landmark upgrade will make the precinct safer, more accessible, and visually appealing.
"The City of Canada Bay is proud to be delivering this crucial project for our Rhodes community."
"It is about creating a connected and vibrant community space - improving pathways, streetscapes, and lighting, adding new public art, and ensuring better links between transport and the Peninsula, in particular to the new Rhodes Recreation Centre."
Key features of the Rhodes Station Precinct Revitalisation include:
Safer, wider pedestrian and cycling pathways
Improved traffic calming
Streetscape beautification, including landscaping and lighting
New public art
Improved access between Rhodes Station and Rhodes Recreation Centre
The upgrade will also see more than 60 new trees planted throughout the precinct.
Council has also confirmed that access to Rhodes Station will be maintained throughout the works during the station's operational hours, with temporary pedestrian and traffic diversions in place where necessary.
Construction is scheduled to begin in two stages, with Stage One works commencing in the southern part of Walker Street and Mary Street in mid-October 2025.
Stage Two works covering the area immediately surrounding the station to the northern end of Walker Street to Gauthorpe Street - beginning in February 2026.
It is expected that works will be finalised before July 2026, with completion depending on a number of factors such as weather and Transport for NSW approvals.
The Rhodes Station Precinct Revitalisation follows extensive planning by the City of Canada Bay and will launch in parallel with the opening of the Rhodes Recreation Centre later this year.
"This is about building a safer, greener, and more connected Rhodes - and ensuring our community has the facilities and infrastructure it deserves," Mayor Megna said.
