Sudbury, ON - Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario - FedNor
Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, today announced a FedNor investment of $1,050,000 in Cambrian College's Centre for Smart Mining (CSM). The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor.
With FedNor's support, CSM will expand its research and training services to meet growing demands in the mining sector. Over three years, CSM will work with up to 145 mining technology small and medium-sized enterprises, offering access to advanced equipment and expertise, and delivering customized upskilling programs in areas like automation, AI, and electric vehicle (EV) development. The Centre will also broaden its research into EV powertrain testing and critical mineral extraction technologies to support Canada's clean economy goals.
The project will roll out in phases: Year one will focus on scaling operations, hiring new staff, acquiring advanced equipment, and expanding partnerships. Year two will grow the research portfolio and enhance student training with certifications in key technical areas. By year three, CSM will be operating at full capacity, delivering a wide range of services and pursuing long-term sustainability to support future growth in the EV and critical minerals sectors.
These efforts will strengthen Sudbury's global leadership in mining innovation, support workforce development, and drive sustainable growth across Northern Ontario.
