A second parkrun event will kick off in the coming weeks with Rockhampton Regional Council providing support to ensure a safer event for all.
Parkrun Australia received a $2000 grant from Council's Community Assistance Program (CAP) for the purchase of a defibrillator, a vital piece of equipment for the new Kershaw Gardens Park Run.
Communities, Culture and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said events such as parkrun brought bring the community together.
"Parkrun is a brilliant example of what the Community Assistance Program is all about," Cr Wickerson said.
"It brings Council a lot of pride and joy to be able to support events like these that bring people together, get people active and all while running through just one of the beautiful parks in our region.
"With Council support parkrun organisers and volunteers can also rest easy knowing they have support on hand in case of an emergency.
"I really encourage any organisation with an event coming up to apply for the Community Assistance Program when applications open again in May."
Event Director Garry Womsley said parkrun supports the wellbeing of the community.
"They encourage both mental and physical health as well as participation for all ages and abilities," Mr Womsley said.
"The existing parkrun is growing and parking is limited in the Botanic Gardens, so l felt it was time to have an alternative on the Northside."
The new Kershaw Gardens parkrun will kick off in the coming weeks.
The Community Assistance Program supports non-profit community-based organisations with funding for grants and sponsorships towards projects and events that enhance the region's well-being.
Applications for Round 1 of the Community Assistance Program for 2026 open on Monday, 25 May and close on Friday, 10 July.
