Car impounded in Lyndhurst

Somerville Highway Patrol officers have stopped a tragedy waiting to happen after detecting a car travelling at excessive speed in Lyndhurst this morning.

Officers were performing speed detection on Thompsons Road just after midnight when they detected a vehicle travelling at an alleged speed of 174km/hr in an area with a limit of 90km/hr.

They intercepted the black Ford Falcon and found its driver was a 28-year-old man from Narre Warren.

An inspection of the vehicle also allegedly found that it was in an unroadworthy condition.

He will be charged on summons with drive at speed dangerous, exceed the speed limit by more than 45km/hr, and use an unroadworthy motor vehicle.

His car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1038.
