Carers Corner Visit Yalukit Willam Reserve

Our new Carers Corner program offers a free welcoming space where carers can do just that - relax, share experiences and take a break from their daily responsibilities of caring for a family member or friend.

Each fortnight, local carers come together for informal catch-ups, hear from guest speakers or participate in outings that encourage connection and wellbeing.

Recently, carers were taken for a guided tour of the evolving Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve by Council officers. The visit offered a meaningful opportunity for carers to slow down and connect with nature.

For Andreas, discovering the reserve was a highlight.

"It's a hidden gem. It brings me into the bush right under our nose," he said.

"It's relaxing and interesting, I didn't know about the frogs and the birds," Andreas said.

"As a carer you always have a schedule, but these two hours connecting to nature helped me to be present, and with my mindset."

Time to pause with Carers Corner

Carers Corner provides a supportive environment where carers can share experiences, learn more about Council services and connect with others who understand the challenges and rewards of caring.

Another participant, Anne, said outings such as the Yalukit Willam visit, offered both calm and connection.

"It's very peaceful and calming, which is what you need as a carer," she said.

"It's nice to walk around and enjoy the surroundings."

She also valued the opportunity to meet others in similar circumstances.

"It's time out and enjoyable, and a good way of communicating, learning and being supported," Anne said.

"We need to take care of ourselves so we can take care of others," Andreas said.

"If you're an unpaid carer, join Carers Corner and be quick before there's a waiting list."

Upcoming Carer's Corner events include yoga, a Bay Road Heathland tour, art for wellbeing, reflexology and a trivia morning tea.
