Catching Train? Items You Should Leave At Home

  • Queensland Rail recorded more than 400 prohibited items on the network in 2025.
  • New footage shows people attempting to board trains with lawnmowers, pets and even a chainsaw.
  • Customers risk fines or charges for bringing oversized, unsafe or banned items onboard.
Queensland Rail has released new vision showing some of the surprising - and prohibited - items people have tried to bring onboard, including lawnmowers, pets and even a chainsaw in a carry case.
In 2025, more than 400 prohibited items were reported across the network, prompting a reminder to customers about what can and can't travel on trains.
Queensland Rail's General Manager Security and Emergency Preparedness, Drew Brock, said oversized, unsafe or banned items can pose real safety risks.
"Most customers do the right thing, but we continue to see a small number bringing items that can cause disruption, discomfort or even danger," he said.
"Customers should avoid bringing any sizeable objects that can't be stored under a seat or in a designated area and be aware that only assistance animals are allowed onboard.
"Bikes and e scooters must be kept in the first and last carriages of six car trains, and aisles, doorways and priority seating areas must remain clear."
Alcohol, vaping and smoking are prohibited on all Queensland Rail property.
Queensland Rail's security teams, including Authorised Officers, Mobile Security Dog units, and nightly Guardian Train services, are supported by around the clock monitoring from the Rail Management Centre, with access to more than 12,000 CCTV cameras.
Queensland Rail also works closely with the Queensland Police Service Railway Squad, whose 98 officers provide a strong, visible presence across the network.
