CDU TAFE Certificate III in Individual Support inaugural cohort in Timor-Leste.

Charles Darwin University (CDU) TAFE has officially launched its first offshore aged care training program in Timor-Leste, delivering the Certificate III in Individual Support on location as part of its expanding international engagement.

In 2024, CDU and the Government of Timor-Leste, through the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE), formalised their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deliver specialised vocational training.

The collaboration aims to strengthen the local workforce and provide Timorese students with access to Australian-accredited qualifications.

The inaugural cohort commenced training in May 2025, with a formal opening ceremony held in Dili. The event was attended by the Australian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Ms Caitlin Wilson, and Secretary of State for SEFOPE His Excellency Rogerio Araujo Mendonça.

CDU Pro-Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive TAFE, Michael Hamilton, said the program is designed to complement existing local training while introducing international standards.

"By offering Australian qualifications, these courses not only enhance existing training but also provide additional skills and career opportunities," Mr Hamilton said.

"Delivering training on the ground in Timor-Leste makes it more accessible and affordable, allowing students to return home to their families each day. Our team is proud to support the growth of the aged care sector here and help build local capacity."

His Excellency Rogerio Araujo Mendonça acknowledged the significance of the partnership, highlighting that this is the first time an Australian aged care qualification has been delivered and accredited in Timor-Leste, and is working with CDU TAFE to expand this type of training into other industries.

"Today marks an important step forward-not only in vocational education and training, but in how we support and care for our elderly citizens," he said.

"No one should be left behind, especially our elders. I extend my deep gratitude to our partners and their commitment to strengthening vocational education in our country."

Ambassador Ms Caitlin Wilson welcomed the initiative as a meaningful step under the newly signed MoU between SEFOPE and CDU.

"This is the first time an Australian-accredited aged care qualification is being delivered in Timor-Leste and we are proud to support this partnership and look forward to the success of this training program," Ambassador Wilson said.

The launch of CDU TAFE's aged care training in Timor-Leste marks a significant milestone in CDU's transnational education and international collaborations.
