Celebrating National Reconciliation Week: Bridging Gaps

Council invites the community to come together for a week of meaningful events and activities during National Reconciliation Week 2025, held from 27 May to 3 June.

As part of Council's ongoing commitment to reconciliation, events will be held across the shire to create opportunities for residents of all ages to learn, reflect and connect.

National Reconciliation Week is a special time to explore our shared histories, celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and consider how each of us can contribute to a more just, equitable and reconciled country.

This year's theme – 'Bridging Now to Next' – calls on us to take action, deepen our understanding and strengthen our relationships.

Mayor Dom Bonanno said the week is an important reminder that reconciliation is an ongoing journey we all share in many different ways.

"Reconciliation Week is a chance for us to come together in unity and respect, to listen, learn, and grow as a community," he said.

"We're proud to both host and be a partner in events that honour the cultures and contributions of Traditional Custodians and help foster understanding, healing and hope for future generations."

The Macedon Ranges is located on the Country of the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Peoples: Traditional Custodians who continue to practise culture, care for Country and shape strong, thriving futures for their communities.

A highlight of the week will be a series of smoking ceremonies on the lands of each of our three Traditional Owner groups in Woodend, Kyneton and Riddells Creek.

Led by respected Elders, these ceremonies cleanse the space, offer healing and invite all who attend to come together in a spirit of respect and wellbeing. Following each ceremony, community members are invited to stay for a yarning circle: a welcoming and culturally safe space for open storytelling, listening and sharing.

Families are encouraged to attend a special story time at Romsey Library, where Uncle Ron Murray and Sara James will share stories and songs in partnership with Goldfields Libraries. Local libraries will also be hosting a variety of engaging activities and displays throughout the week.
