Celebration Of Hoki Season

Seafood New Zealand

Late June to early September in New Zealand is hoki season, when many of them spawn off the West Coast of the South Island and in the Cook Strait. As the first-ever whitefish fishery in the world to be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, since 2001 this fish has endeared itself to seafood lovers around the world. Photographer Steve Hussey headed out with Resolution II owner-operator Chase Saunders-Loder to capture some of the sun-drenched moments that make this fishing season so special.

"I've been on quite a few boats, and it's always felt really friendly and welcoming. You often have the idea that it's going to be a tough, harsh environment, but the people themselves seem genuinely open and caring. I like their attitude. I like the way that they embrace working in the environment they do. They all love it. You know, the challenges just add to the rewards." - Photographer Steve Hussey

"Our hoki fishery is so important to us, and the entire industry works on many different levels to ensure that stocks remain healthy. This year's hoki season has reflected our efforts, with a bountiful, sustainable harvest." - Aaron Irving, Seafood New Zealand GM Deepwater

"It's exciting to go out over the the Greymouth bar - it's an exciting part of navigation and New Zealand coastal history. I just see myself as a storyteller when I'm there. I'm just trying to set the scene for a viewer that shows extraordinary locations and people who are authentic. What they're doing is a rewarding career with feeding lots of people through their hard work. Chase is incredibly competent. He's great communicator, and he leads a team and you really feel like everybody respects him." - Photographer Steve Hussey
