Central Australia Flood Risk - Be Prepared

NT Government

A developing weather system in Central Australia has the potential for heavy rains and flash flooding in coming days.

Residents and visitors to the areas are advised to take the necessary precautions.

"Together with the Bureau of Meteorology, we are keeping a very close eye on the weather in Central Australia," Commander Sonia Kennon said.

"We have already seen two significant flooding events in Alice Springs in recent weeks, and widespread rainfalls are expected across the region. As we all know, there has been a lot of rain in all districts and Central Australia is saturated. It will only take a small amount of water for rivers to flow and flash floods to occur.

"With a weather system setting into the Central Australian region, we are asking the community to do their bit to make sure they are prepared and aware of the risks.

"We don't need to panic, we need you to prepare. We ask you to top up your emergency kits today and stay informed as the weather system develops."

As always, please take it safely on the roads, avoid driving into flooded crossings and never enter flood waters of any type.

Current forecasting has the bulk of rainfall expected in the Tanami and south west districts, however Alice Springs residents are asked to take precautionary measures today.

"If you live in an area that flooded during the recent events, you will be at higher risk should there be renewed rainfalls in the catchment," Commander Kennon said.

"As a precaution, sandbags are available for collection from the Northern Territory Emergency Service Headquarters at 32 Wilkinson Street until 4pm today and between 8am-4pm on Sunday.

"Owners of vehicles parked in underground car parks could consider moving their cars to higher ground to avoid the risk of getting caught out in a flash flood."
