Police have arrested and charged four people following an aggravated burglary in Kaikohe.
The charges come after an elderly man and a dog sustained serious injuries at a residential address on Cottage Court on 13 September.
Detective Sergeant Bart Graham, Northland CIB, says several people were allegedly responsible for the violent offending, and an investigation was launched to locate them.
"Early yesterday morning, CIB alongside the Armed Offenders Squad executed a search warrant at an address in Kaikohe.
"Four suspects were located at the property and three were immediately arrested."
One male attempted to flee on foot, but he was quickly arrested without incident.
Three men, aged 19, 21 and 39, have been charged with aggravated burglary; wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; assault with intent to injure; possession of an offensive weapon; and assaults person with a weapon.
They have been remanded in custody and will reappear in Kaikohe District Court on 27 October
A 17-year-old male has been charged with aggravated burglary; wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; assault with intent to injure; possession of an offensive weapon; assaults person with a weapon; and cruelty/ill-treatment of an animal.
He will reappear in Kaikohe Youth Court on 28 October.
Detective Sergeant Graham says Police understand how distressing this offending was, and investigators hope these arrests will help provide reassurance to the victims and the community.
"Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home.
"This violent, senseless offending has no place in our community, and those responsible will be held to account."
