Charges laid after teenager seriously injured in Southern Highlands crash

A man has been charged after a teenager was seriously injured following a single-vehicle crash in the Southern Highlands in August, NSW Police say.

Police will allege a Toyota Corolla, driven by an 18-year-old man, was travelling westbound on the Illawarra Highway at Burrawang, about 15km east of Moss Vale, about 11.30pm on Tuesday 21 August 2018, when sedan left the road and struck a tree.

A 15-year-old boy was thrown from the vehicle and sustained serious head injuries. He was taken to Liverpool Hospital where he remains.


The driver and a 15-year-old female passenger were taken to Wollongong Hospital with minor injuries and have since been released.

A 17-year-old female passenger was also taken to Liverpool Hospital with minor injuries and has since been released.

Officers from the Lake Illawarra Crash Investigation Unit commenced inquiries into the incident.

Following inquiries, the 18-year-old driver was arrested at Moss Vale Police Station yesterday (Saturday 13 October 2018).

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm - drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm), cause bodily harm by misconduct - in charge of motor vehicle (x2), learner/P1/P2 driver with under 16 years old not restrained (x2), and learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Moss Vale Local Court on Tuesday 6 November 2018.
