Choose to reuse at this year's Garage Sale Trail

Brimbank residents, schools, businesses and community groups are being encouraged to rethink the way unwanted items can be reused and given a second life, at this year's Garage Sale Trail.

The event, being held nationally from Saturday 19 to Sunday 20 October 2019, is an initiative to raise awareness around the impact that everything we buy has on the environment, and reducing waste.

Mayor of Brimbank, Cr Lucinda Congreve said Council is proud to be taking part in the event for the third year running and hopes the whole community gets involved.

"If we can make small changes like buying or selling second-hand one weekend of the year, imagine the impacts we can make happen for the rest of the year!

"Choosing to reuse by putting second-hand first reduces the amount we send to landfill, the number of new products made, and the overall impact on the planet," Cr Congreve said.

Brimbank Council is encouraging anyone who wants to take part in this year's Garage Sale Trail to register a stall from 10 August and to take advantage of some free services that will available to the first 1,250 sellers until 10 September.

"Everyone can do it. Households, schools, community groups, even whole streets can get involved over the one big weekend, and it's a fun way to fundraise and meet your neighbours," Cr Congreve said.

"Clothing, household items, books, furniture, crafts and plants are just some of things you might find as you visit the garage sales. You'll bag a bargain but you will also be contributing positively to a great cause.

"In our first year, Brimbank residents did a fabulous job supporting the program with more than 90 individual and group sales across 12 suburbs; in fact, Brimbank Council received the Best Newcomer Award.

"In 2018 more than 2,000 sellers and shoppers took part, making just over $15,500 in total. I'm sure we can top those results this year if we all get together and make an effort," Cr Congreve said.

To take part you must register your sale (no cost) at www.garagesaletrail.com.au/Brimbank or call 02 9052 0827. Registrations open 10 August 2019.
