The 2019 edition of the report presents current statistics and trends on the use of intellectual property (IP) in Canada, and internationally by Canadians. This information could help you identify potential growth opportunities and increase your competitiveness globally.
This year’s report also features an analysis based on the results of the 2017 Survey on Financing and Growth of Small and Medium Enterprises, and an overview of patenting activity in the
agri-food processing sector.

Growth in IP applications: In 2018, CIPO received applications for 36,162 patents, 63,059 trademarks and 6,568 industrial designs. Trademark applications showed the strongest annual growth (7%), followed by patents (3%) and industrial designs (1%).
Strong growth in Canadian patent applications at CIPO: In 2018, CIPO received 4,348 patent applications from residents, a 7% increase from the previous year, and 31,814 patent applications from non-residents, a 3% increase.
Impressive long-term growth in trademarks: Trademark applications by Canadians, filed both at CIPO and abroad, have grown over 50% since 2009. Annual growth for all trademark applications at CIPO has averaged 3% over the last decade.
Industrial design applications at CIPO continue to grow due to non-resident activity: Industrial design applications at CIPO have grown 54% since 2009, with non-resident applications driving this trend and growing 69% over this same period.
IP use and awareness by SMEs: Small and medium-sized enterprises who were aware of or used IP, experienced better outcomes with respect to financing, growth, market expansion and innovation.
Substantial growth in patenting related to fish and shellfish processing: Worldwide patenting in agri-food processing grew substantially from 2000 to 2017, particularly in fish and shellfish processing (655%). Canadian patents for fish and shellfish processing technologies are concentrated mainly in the Atlantic provinces.
