Circus Infuses Kimberley With Colorful Creativity

  • Cook Government invests in culturally safe youth programs
  • Circus arts to bring creativity to remote Kimberley communities
  • Theatre Kimberley Youth Program to support mental wellbeing and social connection

Theatre Kimberley will continue to deliver its popular circus-based activities to children and young people in the region, thanks to support from the Cook Government.

The Theatre Kimberley Youth Program gives young people a chance to be creative, learn new skills and explore future job paths, all while supporting mental wellbeing and social connection.

A Healthway grant of $141,330 has been awarded to Theatre Kimberley to deliver two culturally safe programs for young people across the region through to 2027.

The Sandfly Circus Program offers weekly circus classes for young people in Broome, with students delivering a two-day public performance each year to showcase their skills.

The Dragonfly Outreach Program delivers a multi-week artist residency in remote West Kimberley communities, offering culturally responsive activities that build confidence, identity and connection through storytelling.

The Theatre Kimberley Youth Program is part of Healthway's Social and Emotional Wellbeing through the Arts initiative which supports arts educators and parents to build the social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people participating in arts programs.

It forms part of the Cook Government's commitment to supporting regional communities to thrive.

As stated by Preventative Health Minister Sabine Winton:

"When young people are given the chance to create, connect and perform, they discover more than just skills - they uncover confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging.

"Through circus arts and cultural storytelling, Theatre Kimberley's Youth Program opens doors to self-expression and emotional wellbeing.

"No matter where you live, every child deserves the opportunity to shine, to be seen, and celebrated."

Comments attributed to Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:

"Creative programs like this are a powerful way to support mental wellbeing.

"They give young people a safe, healthy outlet to express themselves, connect with others, and feel proud of what they have achieved.

"It's important these programs are culturally safe and delivered in ways that respect community and culture."
