City Honors Community Strength During Refugee Week

Community members from all backgrounds are invited to 'Shared Journeys,' our free and family friendly celebration marking Refugee Week 2025 (16 – 22 June).

The City's Youth Development Unit is partnering with Northern Bay College and CatholicCare Victoria to host a community celebration on Friday 20 June between 4 – 6pm at our fOrT Youth Hub, corner of Melbourne and St Georges roads, Norlane.

There will be live performances, human foosball matches, an Afghan tea tent, a henna stall, an interactive art workshop, a photobooth and cultural tasting plates.

The Refugee Council of Australia is continuing its three-year theme of 'Finding Freedom', focusing on diversity in community to emphasise the vital role community plays in all our lives, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, language, disability, sexuality and age.

The Geelong region provides a safe place to settle for many refugees on humanitarian grounds.

Councillors welcome new arrivals to the region's Wurriki Nyal civic precinct throughout the year as part of the Cultura New Arrivals Tour. The purpose of the visit is to introduce them to the region and provide information on our services, contact points and local laws.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

Greater Geelong has been recognised as a 'Refugee Welcome Zone' since 2002.

Ongoing conflicts overseas have displaced many people, with some of them finding new homes here in Greater Geelong.

Let's spend Refugee Week raising awareness about the issues affecting refugees and celebrating how the contributions of those from refugee backgrounds help make our community richer.

Councillor Andrew Katos, Multicultural Affairs & Citizenship portfolio chair

Council is proud to celebrate Refugee Week once again.

We're excited to put on a celebration called 'Shared Journeys' and reinforce how community acts as a lifeline to refugees, offering safety, belonging, and the strength to rebuild.

Come along to the fOrT Youth Hub on Friday 20 June and try out some new foods, play games and meet a diverse range of community members.
