City of Perth Wellington Square Playground wins national award

City of Perth's Wellington Square Playground has been recognised on the national stage.

Parks and Leisure Australia, the key professional association for the industry, has announced the winners of its 2021 National Awards for Excellence.

The City of Perth is the proud winner of the Best Playspace Award (greater than $0.5M) for the Wellington Square Playground (Koolangka Koolangka Waabiny).

Funded by Lotterywest for $4.37m, Koolangka Koolangka Waabiny is one of the biggest and best playgrounds in greater Perth, situated in the south-east corner of Wellington Square in East Perth.

The theme for the community playground is 'Landscape of Play' and the design is influenced by Whadjuk Nyoongar stories of place and Western Australian iconic landforms.

The park features a range of facilities including a skatepark, parkour course (??), a flying fox, embankment slides, a pump track, waterplay, climbing towers, picnic and BBQ facilities.

"We are absolutely delighted to win this national award, having been recognised at state level in May," Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said.

"It is amazing to see the City of Perth recognised for such a beautifully designed playground. This award cements the city's vision of Perth as a great place to be – a safe, clean and an attractive hub for residents, visitors, families and friends to meet, celebrate, adventure and explore."
