City performs strongly in 'Know Your Council' data

Data released by the State Government today shows the City of Greater Bendigo performed well in 2020/2021 across many key service areas during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the 2020/2021 financial year, community satisfaction with Council was higher compared to previous years.

The City achieved top ranking for sealed roads maintained to condition standards and received strong community satisfaction with sealed local roads.

The City also recorded strong results for the proportion of library resources less than five years old and had the least number of missed kerbside bin collections compared to similar Councils. Maternal Child Health also remained consistent across performance indicators.

The data on the website is collected from all 79 Councils in Victoria as part of the State Government's Local Government Performance Reporting Framework.

The City is included in the 'Regional City' category which also covers Geelong, Ballarat, Shepparton, Latrobe, Mildura, Warrnambool, Wodonga, Horsham and Wangaratta.

City Director Corporate Performance Andrew Cooney said the Know Your Council data showed the City was performing well despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on many services during the 2020/2021 reporting period.

"I would like to acknowledge our staff who responded and adapted very well in a challenging environment to deliver important services to the community," Mr Cooney said.

"The Know Your Council data helps us track our progress over time and make improvements to our services wherever possible.

"We continue to perform well in many areas, including roads, waste management and customer service which was rated very good or good by 66 per cent of customers contacting our Customer Service.

"In the sealed roads category, almost 100% of our roads are maintained to condition standards and our community satisfaction with sealed roads is very strong compared to other similar Councils.

"In terms of waste management and costs, there is still much work to be done in this area to meet long-term solutions and divert waste from landfill. Much of the cost is associated with the mandatory payment of the landfill levy to the Environment Protection Authority.

"Changes in the recycling markets have also meant more packaging items are no longer accepted in kerbside recycling.

"We continue to review arrangements of garbage collection services to ensure we are providing a high-quality service that delivers value for the community.

"Overall, I think this year's results show we are providing sustainable, high quality and consistent services to our community, despite the significant impact of the pandemic over the 2020/2021 financial year."
