Darwin's post-cyclone recovery progresses, with more ovals reopening and key services resuming across the city.
City of Darwin crews have cleared the Jingili, Kahlin and Fannie Bay ovals to reopen today, joining the already reopened Gardens and Nightcliff ovals.
Despite these reopenings, all ovals and surrounding park areas remain far from fully restored, with ongoing clean-up, debris removal and tree-risk works continuing across the municipality. Parks and ovals may or may not be suitable depending on location, and conditions can change quickly as further assessments continue.
We strongly encourage all users to exercise caution, remain alert to damaged trees and taped-off zones. Community safety remains our priority as recovery efforts progress.
Also, from today, Beam scooter and bike services will recommence operations between the Darwin Waterfront and Cullen Bay, extending to Fannie Bay and Parap, with additional staged access expected throughout December and January.
In line with the City of Darwin and Beam Emergency Management Plans, all scooters were removed ahead of Cyclone Fina.
Earlier this weekend, the Northern Territory Government, in collaboration with City of Darwin, announced the extension of public access to the Hidden Valley cyclone emergency green waste site until Sunday 21 December, giving residents additional time to dispose of green waste on their properties.
City of Darwin will reopen Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility for residential green waste from 22 December.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the City of Darwin staff and crews have made significant progress this week and was happy to announce the reopening of various ovals in time for the weekend.
Mr Styles encouraged those looking for a weekend activity to explore the many events.
"The festive spirit is alive this weekend with the continuation of Santa's Village at The Galleria on Smith Street, and the 50th Carols by Candlelight now at the Darwin Convention Centre on Sunday evening."
"Looking into next week, there's plenty other festivities in the pipeline, from Mrs Claus Story Time at City of Darwin Libraries to the much-loved Casuarina Christmas Pool Party next Saturday 13 December."
"We appreciate everyone's understanding, and we'll continue to share updates as they're available," he added.
