CITYLIFE Platform Lightboxes Exhibition Opening

An exhibition of artworks by nine young local artists, themed ‘Home Turf: Adventures in Art’, is being launched on Sunday, 18 April from 6pm to 7pm at the Nightcliff Foreshore cafe.

The exhibition, celebrating young Darwin artists, is centred around Youth Week 2021 and is part of City of Darwin’s CITYLIFE Platform Lightboxes project.

Exhibition curator, Kezia Dilettoso, is a young emerging arts worker and current student at Charles Darwin University.

“Ten artworks have been selected from a very competitive pool of applicants aged between 12 and 25, and the title was created to reflect the spirit of the artworks chosen,” said Ms Dilettoso.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said that showcasing the talents of our young people is highly important.

“This is a great opportunity for people to get involved in public art and to add vibrancy to our public spaces through fun, interesting and beautiful works of art.

“I would encourage people to visit the lightboxes and admire the great talent we have here across our city,” said the Lord Mayor.

The youngest artist featured this year is Kaleb Tester who is only 12 years old. Merlin Martin is a local artist who has previously designed skate decks for Council’s LAUNCH Skate program and has his first solo show opening at Coconut Studios on 16 April. Heavy City by Colby Thomas was chosen by City of Darwin’s Youth Advisory Committee to promote the exhibition by featuring on the front of April’s edition of Off the Leash magazine.

Featured artist, Colby Thomas, said: “I’m very excited to have my artwork selected and displayed in Darwin where I grew up and live. It’s fantastic that people will get to see my art pieces and I hope that they will like and enjoy them.”

The illuminated lightboxes can be found across three key locations around the city, the Mall, Nightcliff Pool and Chinatown carpark until October 2021.
