New pooch parents on the Gold Coast can register their puppies for free as part of the City's annual registration renewal campaign.
Dog registrations are due by August 31 with all Gold Coast pooches required to be registered not just for legal reasons but to help keep them and the community safe.
Free puppy registrations are available for the initial registration for all dogs under 12 months of age giving new owners a head start on responsible pet ownership.
"We're asking all dog owners to help create a truly pet-friendly city by being responsible dog owners and keeping registrations up to date," said Deputy Mayor Mark Hammel.
"It is a requirement under state legislation to ensure your dog is registered and importantly helps us reunite lost pets with their family.
"It also helps fund the paw-some facilities we have like off leash dog parks, dog bag dispensers and community education activities.
"For those new puppy owners there is no excuse to avoid registration given it won't cost you a thing for the first registration."
The City estimates that there are 140,000 dogs living on the Gold Coast however only 71,000 (51 per cent) are actually registered.
As well as free initial registration for dogs under 12 months, there is no cost for assistance dogs.
Registration is also free for seniors over 60 years of age and veterans for two desexed dogs. For more details visit the City website.
Discounts are available for desexed dogs and pension concession card holders.
An infringement notice of over $300 can be issued to owners of unregistered dogs.
Renewing or registering your dog is easy online via the City of Gold Coast website or by visiting a local customer service centre.
